Training leaders

Our Professional Advancement Program provides LIUNA members with a career path to jobsite leadership. For contractors, this means creating the next generation of supervisors. Training under this program targets the experienced LIUNA Laborer who is recommended by a local union or contractor to take the next step towards leadership.

All courses under the Professional Advancement Program build upon a worker’s construction experience, but concentrate on honing skills needed by jobsite leaders: from learning how to teach workers and directing workflow to managing a construction project and improving communications.

Jobsite leadership is more than just knowing about the construction process, it’s also about managing people. Potential foremen and superintendents will begin to learn about understanding their new responsibilities: how to deal with different types of people, how to communicate better, how to schedule work and complete forms, and how to keep their crew safe.

Courses under the Professional Advancement Program help contractors fill workforce needs and provide motivation to experienced workers ready to move into leadership positions. The program also serves as a worker’s foundation for job growth as a certified safety professional, general foreman, laborer foreman, site safety and health officer, or site superintendent.

LIUNA local unions and contractors are always looking for Laborers who take command of a situation, know how to get a complex job done, and can be sought out for advice.

Professional Advancement Program offerings are listed to the right. For information about what LIUNA Training offers in your area, find a training center near you.
