October 2011Prior to the 24th LIUNA National Convention in Las Vegas, LIUNA’s Training Fund Directors gathered at a meeting held by the LIUNA Training and Education Fund. Most of LIUNA’ s 72 Training Funds were represented. Participants were treated to an impromptu visit and remarks from LIUNA General President Terence O’Sullivan. LIUNA Training Profiled in Water Works White Paper
October 2011For over 100 years, members of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) have worked on jobs that move water. They have built locks, dams, levees and tunnels; they have laid water supply and wastewater removal pipes; and they have installed stormwater control systems. Over the past decade, Laborers have seen changes in the way they accomplish traditional work in water infrastructure, water management, and pollution prevention. For example, they may now install plastic pipe for moving fresh and waste water, use trenchless technologies to repair and replace existing pipe with a minimum of surface disruption, and work on construction projects that separate storm sewers and sanitary sewers, stopping overflow of sewage into waterways after heavy rains. Laborers’ skills are also in demand for new types of work. DOL Awards Green Jobs Grant
June 2011On June 22, 2011, the Department of Labor awarded a $5.5 million Green Jobs Innovation grant to LIUNA Training and Education Fund. The Fund is one of six organizations to receive funds under this jobs training program and the only construction trade union to be included. The three year grant will fund training in energy efficiency and green construction in seven different locations: Cincinnati, Miami, New Orleans, New York City, and Long Island, Newburgh, and Albany/Schenectady, New York. Participants will learn jobs skills in weatherization, geothermal, green construction, or waste water management as well as general construction. After training, workers will qualify for LIUNA Apprenticeship programs and living wage jobs with career growth opportunities. The Green Jobs Innovation grant is one of many programs that LIUNA Training and its affiliated training sites provide to build worker skills, promote job site safety, and improve the lives of LIUNA members. ...

October 2010LIUNA Training hosted a Training Fund Director’s Meeting on August 15, 2010 prior to the start of the biannual Tri-Fund Conference in San Diego. September 2010LIUNA Training & Education Fund held its Annual Instructor Conference (AIC) in St. Charles Illinois, June 6 – 11, 2010. Those in attendance included apprenticeship coordinators, Job Corps instructors, training directors, and both new and seasoned training fund instructors. May 2010This March, 55 certified Hazardous Waste Instructors completed their annual two-day refresher training at the New England Laborers’ Training Trust Fund (NELTA) Hopkinton, MA facility.
