We use the best techniques to
create the most effective teachers.

More than 300 LIUNA instructors and apprenticeship coordinators help build the workforce of tomorrow. They blend not one but two careers – one in construction and their new career in worker education – to teach and guide the trade workers who build our roads, bridges and buildings and safely remove toxic hazards from the environment.

With the future quality of our construction workforce at stake, trade instructors must not only master their professions, but they must also keep up-to-date on construction industry skills and educational trends, so they receive both instructional and technical training. Instructors must attain proficiency in core construction skills, participate in advanced level industry skills training, and take courses that teach them how to be an instructor. For instance, all instructors take New Instructor Training, where they study adult learning theory and techniques and practice teaching styles, presentation techniques and activity-based exercises.

Fortunately, LIUNA schedules instructor training sessions several times each year. Offerings reflect training center input, instructor needs and industry trends. Generally course rotations include safety, construction and environmental skills, and professional development training. For example, this year's schedule includes OSHA 500; Weatherization Technician, Supervisor and Energy Auditor; Lead Renovator, and New Instructor Training, among others.

And with nearly 150 Hazardous Waste instructors, we offer six sessions of the two-day instructor refresher course each year. Participants receive updated hazard information based on the latest research, learn how to use new safety equipment, get information on new remediation technologies, and are updated on any OSHA safety changes.
