Putting safety first is the best life saver.
In 2007, construction industry workers suffered more than 1,200 fatal occupational injuries in the U.S., the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports. And though the BLS shows the construction industry's injury rate decreased slightly to 5.4 cases per 100 full-time workers in 2008, these jobs remain inherently high-risk. At LIUNA Training, we place top priority on giving workers the information and practices they need to remain safe on the job, reduce work site hazards, and return home to their families at the end of the day.
While we emphasize safety in all our courses, our Safety Training programs focus on specific areas of jobs with higher than average risk. Most safety courses apply to a variety of industry jobs like Lockout/Tagout and Respiratory Protection, while other safety modules address hazards associated with specific types of work, such as Highway Work Zone Safety and Process Safety Management.
Safety Training is a must for all construction workers, as job sites are dangerous places with common safety hazards such as falls, electrical shock, or being struck by objects. Many states now require that construction workers take the OSHA Construction Industry Outreach training which teaches about common hazards –LIUNA Training offers training centers this safety curriculum.
Some jobs or job sites have additional hazards like heights, trenches, confined spaces, toxic materials, hot or cold environments, fire hazards and more that require advanced knowledge of safety procedures and protective devices that goes beyond the OSHA training. Use of tools and equipment also pose significant risks such as being struck by crane loads or falling objects, and hearing loss from noise. Other hazards workers frequently encounter are basic to the physical nature of construction work – lifting heavy loads can cause back injuries; working in the heat or in protective gear can cause heat stress such as dehydration and heat stroke; working outdoors increases the chance that workers may encounter poisonous insects, snakes, and plants. Our Safety Training programs address all these concerns.
Courses include both classroom hours and hands-on training. Our safety courses are listed to the right, simply click on a subject that interests you for a course description. Some safety-related modules are used in a variety of different courses or training programs such as: Back Injury Prevention, Hearing Safety, Fire Watch, Trench and Excavation Safety, Flagger Safety, and more.
