Workforce Advancement > Job Corps

We provide hands-on training for the US Job Corps.

LIUNA Training continually builds relationships with key education and community based organizations to help strengthen and sustain construction and environmental worker education. One of those partnerships is with the Job Corps. Job Corps is the nation's largest career technical training and education program for students ages 16 through 24. A U.S. Department of Labor program, it provides 100,000 students each year with hands-on training in America's fastest growing careers.

In 2001, Laborers Training signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service to conduct Construction Craft Laborer (CCL) training at seven Forest Service Job Corps Centers. This agreement was renewed in 2009 for another five years.

For the Forest Service, LIUNA Training developed comprehensive programs that train participants, prepare them for work in the construction industry, and help them transition into apprenticeship programs. Affiliated training centers in the regions near each Job Corps center provide direct program oversight and implementation in accordance with our high standards. Training center support includes instructional staff, administrative assistance, coordination with LIUNA Locals and apprenticeship programs, and other student services. LIUNA Training offers program guidance and management, instructor training, and CCL curriculum.

Each program includes coursework and hands-on training that best meets the needs of the regional construction industry. In addition, work-based learning opportunities at the Job Corps Training Center give them experience with actual jobs, where students perform a variety of tasks and undertake projects such as building small structures, conducting facility maintenance, and working on facility improvements. Whenever possible, CCL instructors conduct training in a manner that achieves the same conditions as those found at LIUNA training centers.

Our rigorous and practical program ensures that young adults gain the appropriate knowledge, skills, and personal responsibility they need to successfully begin a career as a CCL. Post-training, we work with LIUNA locals to place CCL Job Corps graduates into CCL apprenticeship programs. Hundreds of youth have participated in our Job Corps programs and many now have living wage jobs that use their new construction skills.
